Junior or Assistant Specialist- Mullins Lab
Department of Cellular & Molecular Pharmacology

Under general supervision (and after appropriate training), the candidate will perform cell biological experiments on both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells involving light and electron microscopy; to perform routine cell culture of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell lines. The eukaryotic cells will include established mouse lines such as B16-F10. The prokaryotic cells will include the thermophilic archaean Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Follow established protocols to purify proteins and assay their biochemical activities. These proteins will include important elements of the cytoskeleton such as actin and the regulatory factors that control the assembly of actin filaments. Under general supervision, help to design and perform biochemical experiments aimed at reconstituting essential cellular processes from purified components.
Required Qualifications:
Junior Specialist- A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in a field relevant to biomedical research, such as biochemistry, biology, biophysics, or bioengineering.
Assistant Specialist- A master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to biomedical research, such as biochemistry, biology, biophysics, or bioengineering with 3 or more years of research experience.
At least six months of biomedical research lab experience, either during undergraduate education or after graduation.
Candidate’s must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidate’s CV must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years of experience working in a research lab
- Experience with protein purification, especially using an AKTA purification system
- Experience with high-resolution light microscopy, especially fluorescence microscopy
- Troubleshooting problems with protein purification and/or protein stability
- Dealing with cell culture contamination
- Designing recombinant DNA constructs for use in expressing fluorescent fusion proteins in live cells
- Optimizing conditions for preparing cells for scanning electron microscopy
