The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine seeks an exceptional, accomplished, and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

The Chair will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Department and will be responsible for advancing its missions in research, education, clinical care, and service. The successful candidate will build upon the Department's existing strengths, guide its continued growth and development, and identify new opportunities for innovation and collaboration across UCSF, UCSF Health, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

The Chair will:

  • Develop, communicate, and implement the Department's strategic vision and priorities.
  • Advance excellence and innovation in research and academic programs.
  • Support high-quality education and training programs.
  • Recruit, retain, mentor, and develop outstanding faculty and staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, collegial, and inclusive departmental culture.
  • Promote multidisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Ensure excellence in clinical programs and patient care, as applicable.
  • Provide responsible financial, operational, and space stewardship.
  • Build and strengthen relationships across UCSF, UCSF Health, affiliated institutions, and the broader community.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must be an accomplished academic leader with a distinguished record in their field and demonstrated success in leadership, research, education, faculty development, and organizational management. The candidate must possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to lead effectively in a complex, collaborative academic and clinical environment. An MD and/or PhD, or equivalent degree, is required.

The Chair will be expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, collaboration, and accountability while advancing the missions of the Department, the UCSF School of Medicine, and UCSF.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $156,300 - $460,700.

Total compensation at the University of California, San Francisco includes your base salary, which is determined by your rank and step at appointment, and negotiated pay for Health Sciences Compensation Plan members. Faculty who are members of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan may also be eligible for additional incentive pay.
