Position description
The Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy seeks an Assistant Researcher specializing in Harm Reduction Research. This position offers an opportunity to join a leading academic institution committed to advancing pharmaceutical care and public health through innovative research and education.
The successful candidate will establish an independent research program focused on harm reduction strategies, overdose prevention, substance use disorders, and health equity initiatives. Drawing from the demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing harm reduction programs within healthcare systems, the position emphasizes translational research that bridges clinical practice with population health outcomes.
Research Focus Areas: The position supports research in harm reduction approaches including but not limited to:
- Innovative harm reduction service delivery models, including technology-enhanced interventions
- Implementation science for syringe services programs and overdose education/naloxone distribution
- HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP delivery and sexual health services for vulnerable populations
- Street medicine and low-barrier healthcare approaches for people experiencing homelessness
- Health equity and addressing syndemic conditions affecting marginalized communities
- Quality improvement methodologies in addiction medicine and pain management
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead a nationally recognized research program in harm reduction and related areas
- Secure extramural funding through federal agencies, foundations, and other sources
- Publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals
- Present findings at national and international conferences
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across UCSF and external partners
- Participate in departmental and university service activities
- Mentor predoctoral students Clinical Integration: The position includes opportunities for clinical practice integration, building upon experience in:
- Direct patient care in harm reduction and addiction medicine settings
- Program development and implementation within healthcare systems
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with medical, nursing, and social work professionals
Ideal Candidate Profile: We seek a PharmD-prepared clinician-scientist with demonstrated expertise in harm reduction research and clinical practice. The candidate should have a strong publication record, experience with grant funding, and a commitment to advancing health equity through innovative pharmaceutical care models.
This position represents a unique opportunity to shape the future of harm reduction research within academic pharmacy while contributing to UCSF's leadership in addressing critical public health challenges. The successful candidate will join a collaborative environment that values innovation, community engagement, and evidence-based approaches to improving health outcomes for underserved populations.
This position is currently funded at 20% through an existing grant for support and the position is fully contingent upon extramural funds for renewal. The incumbent would be required to identify and successfully secure any additional funding.
