Associate Specialist
Department of Physiology
University of California, San Francisco
The Department of Physiology is now recruiting an Associate Specialist. The area of specialization/responsibilities will include:

Coordinate mouse research by:
- instructing research staff on how to maintain IACUC compliance
- helping to prepare IACUC protocol submission and modifications and plan experimental design
- managing a large rodent colony, including genotyping
- training staff to perform stereotaxic surgeries
- maintaining necessary documentation of procedures and surgeries conducted in the lab
- Coordination of animal purchases, transfers, imports and exports including MTAs

Assure chemical and biohazard safety by:
- conducting safety training for new lab members
- maintaining chemical inventory and updating control banded SOPs.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
- Contributes to published research and trains lab members in technical skills related to animal survival surgery.
- Experience maintaining a large rodent colony, ensuring regulatory compliance with IACUC, and drafting animal use protocols.
- Experience using and maintaining specialized equipment, managing asset inventory.

Preferred Qualifications:
Post-graduate training or equivalent of 10 years' experience preferred.

Experimental skills:
- intracranial viral injection
- intracranial microendoscope and canula implantation
- primary neuronal cell culture - cryosectioning, histology and immunostaining techniques
- rodent tattooing and equipment maintenance
- rodent tissue collection and DNA extraction
