Position description

Selleri Lab - Assistant Professional Researcher
Department of Orofacial Sciences, School of Dentistry
UC San Francisco

Job Summary
Position for highly motivated Staff Scientist is available at the Assistant Professional Researcher Series with the Program in Craniofacial Biology at the University of California, San Francisco. Candidate will be hosted in a highly interactive, collaborative, and friendly laboratory with emphasis on mentorship and personal growth.

We study the epigenetic and transcriptional regulation of morphogenesis in development, evolution, and disease. To this end, we use genome-wide, systems-level approaches, leveraging the strengths of different organismal systems, including mouse, chick, pig, and human embryos. A special focus is on organogenesis of the craniofacial & appendicular skeleton.
Candidate will be expected to assume primary responsibility for the development of their research project on NIH funded studies to enable the broader mission of the lab. Ongoing projects require expertise in basic molecular and cellular biology techniques, multi-omics approaches such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, mass spectrometry, proteomics, and lipidomics on embryonic tissue samples, characterization of mouse mutant phenotypes including lineage tracing, RNAScope, and imaging by confocal microscopy. These experimental approaches will require the candidate to be highly engaged and proactive in a dynamic research environment and in a highly collaborative atmosphere.

Candidate will also be expected to take active part in the completion of projects that have been left unfinished by previous lab members, bringing the studies to full completion and seeing them through publication. In addition, part of the candidate’s responsibilities will be devoted to mentoring students and technicians, as well as supporting the faculty supervisor in grant applications and in submission of manuscripts. By doing so, the candidate will learn how to write grant proposals in order to seek their own independent grant funding in the near future. Lastly, the candidate will keep contacts with manufacturers and will aid the lab manager to take care of the laboratory equipment when repairs or quality control are needed.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or relevant field, followed by 5-6 years of postdoctoral experience in related field, utilizing the experimental approaches required by this position as detailed above;
  • Expertise in the use of mouse models including embryo and tissue collection and tissue specimen processing (preservation, cryosectioning, staining, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, RNAScope, confocal imaging) required for this position;
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact productively with lab and campus personnel;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under deadlines with general guidance;
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to accurately complete detailed work; and
  • Team player.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Combined research experience in protein biochemistry, lipid biology, and mouse genetics strongly preferred;
  • Prior hands-on experience in omics approaches including bulk RNA-seq, mass spectrometry, proteomics, and lipidomics will be highly valued and preferred;
  • Experience with grant writing desirable and preferred; and
  • Bioinformatic skills highly desirable but not required.
