Specialist Position: Glioma Surgical Biospecimen Researcher and Outcomes Coordinator
Roles and Responsibilities
Highly motivated individuals with laboratory research experience are being recruited for this research position as a junior specialist. This position is a hybrid position with time spent in the operating room during glioma resections assisting with tissue biospecimen collection and processing as well as clinical data entry/documentation. The position does involve direct interactions with patients with brain tumors. This position will be responsible for collecting tissue from the operating room, documenting the clinical correlations associated with this tissue, and performing standard lab assays to evaluate various immunological and tumor properties in this human tissue. These projects should provide the opportunity for this individual to contribute to gain valuable skills in data management, data analysis, and manuscript writing in addition to earning significant patient-facing experience and interacting with multidisciplinary members of the health-care team. The expectation is this individual will contribute to and be a co-author on multiple peer-reviewed publications and have the opportunity to present their work at the leading scientific meetings in the fields of neuro-oncology and neurosurgery. This individual will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other research groups exploring tumor immunology and novel mechanisms of tumor detection.
- Operating Room Tissue Processing and Data Collection (Top Priority)
- Raman Spectroscopy
- Be available daily for OR cases to provide technical support for Raman machine and data entry/imaging documentation.

- Prospective intracranial Glioma data collection
- Tumor QOD: Collect demographic data on each patient on a weekly basis and enter in databases to ensure baseline details available.
- I.e. MRN, Age, Sex, Surgeon, ICD-10 code, diagnosis, CPT-code, name of surgery, etc.
- ENCRAM Study
- Review case view to identify potentially eligible patients on Sundays and on a daily basis for changes in case scheduling.
- Update patient consent log and communicate with team regarding ongoing inclusions and enrollments.
- Clinical interface with patients for study enrollment/clinically relevant testing for any current and future clinical trials.
- Tumor QOD: Collect demographic data on each patient on a weekly basis and enter in databases to ensure baseline details available.
- Data management and quality assurance
- Assemble intraoperative specimens into database with accurate coding and clinical correlations.
- Cross check data based on different data sources to ensure high data quality is entered into RedCap.
- Contribute to reports, abstracts, posters, and manuscripts for publication.
- Research protocol management
- Assist with the development of IRB protocols and management of any ongoing and future clinical trials.
- Renew and modify existing IRB protocols including but not limited to study procedures and key personnel.
- Interface with other regulatory committees based on IRB protocols, as needed.
- Organize and manage study documents and regulatory documentation.
- Meetings and Project Updates
- Meet with glioma outcomes team weekly to review data, discuss ongoing clinical studies, and ensure goals are being met.
- Meet monthly with Glioma Outcomes Research Group meeting (which will need to be re-established – Drs. Berger, Hervey-Jumper, Molinaro, Young, etc.).
Required Qualifications:
- Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree in Biology or related field by the time of hire.
- Familiarity and experience with biochemistry and mechanisms underlying brain tumor biology.
- Will need to be able to work within a team.
- Capable of adapting quickly to accommodate the overall scientific aims of the group.
- Exceptional time management.
- Lab notebook maintenance, data analysis, and lab organization experience.
- Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- College graduate with training in the field of neuroscience, oncology, immunology, or molecular biology
- Experience with in vitro assays.
- Grant and manuscript writing experience.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period.
