Clinical X and In Residence Faculty Series

Role Overview:
The Division of Hematology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals is recruiting exceptional MD, MD/PhD, or PhD investigators to join the newly established Center for Hematopoiesis and Hemoglobinopathies Research. Appointments will be made at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the In Clinical X or In Residence faculty series. Academic rank is commensurate with experience.

Successful candidates will join a leading academic medical center with a renowned training program, contributing significantly to the Department’s mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.

About the Center:
The Center for Hematopoiesis and Hemoglobinopathies Research will focus on developing innovative therapies for sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and other inherited disorders of hematopoiesis. The Center is located in ~8,000 square feet of newly renovated laboratory space in the Martin Luther King Research Building at Benioff Children's Hospital, Oakland.

This Center will unite basic and translational investigators to explore the molecular mechanisms behind inherited and acquired hematologic disorders, with the goal of translating these discoveries into new treatments. Faculty will have opportunities to collaborate with leading institutions, including the UC Berkeley/UCSF Innovative Genomics Institute and the UCSF Broad Center for Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct pioneering research that results in high-impact, peer-reviewed publications and attracts extramural funding from sources like the NIH.
  • Advance the field of pediatric hematopoietic disorders through basic or translational research.
  • Collaborate with UCSF’s robust stem cell biology and gene-editing research communities.

Research Focus Areas:

  • Sickle Cell Disease
  • Thalassemia
  • Other inherited and acquired hematopoietic disorders affecting pediatric patients

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD, PhD, or MD/PhD
  • Proven track record of publishing high-quality research and securing external funding
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Strong collaborative skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
  • Physician-scientists with training in related fields (e.g., Adult Hematology, Hematopathology)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Current or prospective recipient of federal or equivalent funding as a Principal Investigator
  • Strong communication skills across diverse settings

For positions that are 51% effort or more:
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $127,000-$333,700. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

For positions that are 50% effort or less:
See Table 2 for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $90,700-$238,300.
