Position description
The Zlitni lab is seeking a Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing bioinformatics and computational biology research projects. We invite highly motivated, independent, and organized individuals to join our team. You will contribute to the study of microbial communication in the human microbiome. This position is created for someone with prior computer science/bioinformatics/computational biology and coding experience. The candidate will be expected to contribute to novel projects advancing research and development of computational pipelines for the analysis of publicly available and lab-generated microbial genomics data. An exceptional candidate will move these projects forward independently, helping the lab to develop and test new ideas. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, particularly related to the computational contingent of the lab, perform general lab duties, and be a positive lab citizen. Salary and rank are commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.
Required qualifications:
• Experience with Unix-like and HPC environments, and some familiarity with cloud computing.
• Proficient in Python and/or R Experience with NGS analysis and bioinformatics pipelines, e.g., metagenomics analysis, RNA-seq, comparative genomics, etc.
• Experience with relational databases, data integration, and statistical analysis.
• Familiarity with software development practices and version control systems e.g., GitHub.
• Knowledge of and ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
• Good ability to communicate information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Prior experience working in a research-based setting.
• Basic understanding of troubleshooting and problem-solving.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or a bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Associate rank.
Preferred qualifications:
• Knowledge of microbiology/microbiome, or biochemistry.
• Minimum two-year undergraduate wet laboratory research experience.
