Position description
The Zlitni lab is seeking a Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. This work will focus on the study of microbial communication in the human microbiome using in vitro microbiological and biochemical assays. Lab techniques performed by the Specialist include (but are not limited to): DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, microbial cultures, gram staining, metabolite extraction, and genetic manipulation of microorganisms. This position will involve experiments including bacterial culture (aerobic and anaerobic), molecular biology, gene expression analysis, protein gels, and performing other duties such as lab ordering/organization. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to novel projects advancing research and development of high-throughput in vitro assays to study microbial signaling molecules. An exceptional candidate will move these projects forward independently, helping the lab to develop and test new ideas. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, perform general lab duties, and be a positive lab citizen. General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position and other duties as assigned. In addition, independent research projects are available separate from the above-described duties.
Required qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Prior experience working in a research-based setting.
• Effective use of laboratory instruments and their maintenance; knowledge of basic biomedical and biotechnological techniques and methodologies.
• Knowledge/experience with basic techniques/methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Basic understanding of troubleshooting experiments and problem-solving.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or a bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Associate rank.
Preferred qualifications:
• Prior experience with handling BSL1 and pathogenic (BSL2) microbes, aseptic techniques.
• Experience in basic molecular biology protocols, including PCR and qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction.
• Prior experience in the design and assembly of DNA constructs.
• Experience in basic biochemical techniques, including protein expression and extraction, protein gel analysis.
