Position description

The UCSF Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is seeking one or more visionary neuroscientists or biomedical scientists to join, or lead, the Saul and Ida Epstein Laboratory for Auditory Physiology and Genetics and/or the John C. and Edward Coleman Memorial Laboratories. These full-time faculty positions are open to candidates of all levels (assistant to full), and we encourage outstanding candidates who are partway through their postdoctoral research training to apply, even if their main findings are not yet published. The successful candidates will be expected to establish a dynamic, externally funded, and interactive research program, to join one of our top-ranked interdisciplinary graduate programs (see https://graduate.ucsf.edu/list-programs), and to excel at graduate teaching and mentoring.

Candidates may propose to use any combination of computational, circuit, cellular, systems, and/or molecular approaches to understanding the function of the auditory system in health and disease. Specific expertise in auditory systems research is desirable, but not mandatory. We are also interested in individuals with a strong background in central or peripheral sensory systems research, stem cell technology, tissue engineering, or genetics who plan to transition into an auditory system-focused research portfolio.

The laboratory space for these positions will be located either within the Epstein laboratory (Parnassus campus) or the Coleman laboratory (Mission Bay), depending on the needs of the applicant(s) and fit with surrounding research programs. The Epstein and Coleman Laboratories are endowed Regents Laboratories within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF. Historically, the Epstein lab has focused on basic and applied research for the treatment of deafness, particularly related to cochlear implantation, cochlear physiology, tissue engineering, and genetic therapies, while the Coleman lab has focused on central auditory processing and plasticity. Both laboratories house multiple PIs devoted to hearing science.

Candidates are expected to hold the Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., to have demonstrated significant basic research accomplishment, and to have great potential for future work, likely including collaborations both within the Department and with members of UCSF’s vibrant and diverse neurosciences and/or biomedical sciences community. Senior candidates will be expected to have a track record of consistent funding.

Appointment will be made at a professorial rank commensurate with current academic standing. UCSF offers competitive salaries, research start-up funds, and recruitment allowances, and has numerous opportunities for faculty development and mentorship.

Candidates should submit CV, cover letter indicating which position they are applying for (Neuroscience or Biomedical Science position), a research statement (1 page summary of prior work; 2 page summary of future plans), mentoring/diversity statement (1 page, with emphasis on specific mentoring strategies to support the success of all trainees in their research group) and copies of 3 major publications at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF05310. Candidates should also arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be uploaded directly.

We welcome inquiries about these positions. Please contact the search committee chair, Dr. Andrea Hasenstaub (andrea.hasenstaub@ucsf.edu).
