Position description

Associate/Full Professor of Surgery – Health Service Research Lead
Department of Surgery
University of California, San Francisco

The Department of Surgery at University of California, San Francisco is seeking a full time investigator at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor to create and lead a Health Services Research Core. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing a multi-faceted program of both research and training in surgical health services research and closely related fields. Specifically, this individual will be expected to pursue a personal research portfolio as well as establish robust collaborations with others in the department, both scientists and surgeon scientists, and those in the UCSF community and beyond, building a surgically-focused health services research network. These efforts are expected to facilitate the research and funding success of all members and affiliates of the Core. As such, deliverables and metrics will be not only personal academic output but also that of Core scientists and surgeon-scientists. The leader will be expected to play an instrumental role in providing (co-)mentorship to our talented trainees. We therefore envision the creation of a rich community committed to rigorous and impactful quantitative and qualitative research to improve the delivery of surgical care and the well-being of our patients.

Qualified candidates will be a scientist or surgeon-scientist with a PhD or equivalent degree and must have an established record of extramural funding for research in population-based science. Candidates may have methodological expertise anchored in one or more disciplines including clinical epidemiology, health disparity, implementation science, informatics, patient-centered outcomes research, or comparative effectiveness research, ideally with direct application to surgical care, outcomes, and/or health policy. Over time, the successful candidate will be expected to increase both the breadth and depth of methodological expertise to capably meet the dynamic research needs of both the field and the faculty/Core members.

Candidates will be expected to actively participate in the Department’s residency training and educational programs so skills and/or experience in the education and mentorship of trainees at all levels will be strongly preferred.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $145,500 - $309,800. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
