Position description
Junior Specialist – Sangokoya Lab
The Sangokoya lab at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Parnassus campus has an opening for a research specialist to work at the interface of RNA biology, stem cell biology, and human liver pathology. The lab is establishing imaging tools associated with the investigation of three-dimensional mammalian stem cell models (basic stem cell biology) and human liver tissue (clinical liver pathology)
Responsibilities may include: operation of imaging/cytometry equipment, performing molecular biology techniques including RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, plasmid preparation and basic cloning, performing imaging/cytometry techniques including immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, performing basic data analysis, scientific writing, organization of data appropriate to role in the lab, record keeping and data entry, and shared lab manager/organizational duties.
The specialist will be expected to have enthusiasm for the practice of science, work well as part of a team, and be a positive lab citizen.
The position is ideal for a candidate with a background in developmental/cellular/molecular biology or complementary scientific backgrounds interested in gaining further experience in an academic laboratory working at the boundary of multiple disciplines and interested in gaining experience/competence in variety of techniques.
Required Qualifications:
- Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or have least four years of relevant research experience, by the time of hire.
- Must have previous research experience.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication (verbal and written).
- Ability to work independently, prioritize and coordinate tasks, and meet multiple deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior research experience (submit references as appropriate).
- Experience with data analysis and/or image analysis, are considered a plus.
- Experience with or interest in computational data analysis would be considered exceptional.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
