Position description

Clinical Chemistry and Hematology/Flow Cytometry at the University of California, San Francisco

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking two full-time Clinical Pathologists or Clinical Laboratory Directors for the Clinical Laboratories at the Moffitt-Long, Mt. Zion and Mission Bay Hospitals of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in Clinical Chemistry and in Hematology/Flow Cytometry. The positions are at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels in the Health Sciences Clinical or Clinical X series depending on qualifications and interests. All appointments also require strong commitment to Pathology resident teaching.

Clinical/translational research or other creative scholarly activities would be expected for applicants in the Clinical X series. Applicants must hold either an M.D., Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. dual degrees. All M.D. applicants must be eligible for California medical licensure at the time of appointment. A minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical chemistry or clinical hematology service is required. M.D. applicants should have completed a clinical pathology or anatomic/clinical pathology residency at the time of application as well as a hematopathology fellowship at the time of appointment, when applying for the Hematology/Flow Cytometry position. M.D. or Ph.D. applicants that have completed clinical chemistry training in an ComACC accredited program will be especially competitive for the Clinical Chemistry position. Candidate’s CV must state required qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

The successful candidates will be members of a team of clinical laboratorians that serve as medical directors in the Clinical Laboratories at UCSF. The clinical chemistry service is extremely robust, involving traditional chemistry diagnostics (general chemistry, immunoassay, SPEP, IFE and others) supplemented by mass spectrometry for therapeutic drug monitoring and steroid hormone testing. The laboratory operates 24/7 and offers over 150 different clinical chemistry tests. The hematology/flow cytometry service is growing dramatically, commensurate with the growth in the number of Hematology/Oncology patients seen at UCSF. The flow cytometry laboratory performs multiparameter FACs analysis for diagnosis, classification and management of patients with hematologic disorders such as leukemia/lymphoma. The flow cytometry director will also work with the hematopathology section for interpretations of bone marrow and lymph node biopsy specimens as well as evaluation of blood smears, coagulation and other hematology tests. Both laboratory directors are expected to work closely with clinical colleagues in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and others to provide timely diagnostic support for UCSF patients. Clinical teaching, call conferences and administrative responsibilities will be shared with other members of the clinical laboratory directors. The successful candidates must have good communication skills and demonstrated experience working in a team environment.

Candidates will also be required to play a significant role in teaching fellows, pathology residents and medical students. Development of translational and collaborative research projects in clinical chemistry or clinical hematology as well as involvement in quality improvement projects is a long-term goal of these positions. Salary and title will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.
