Position description

An Imaging Specialist position is available at the University of California, San Francisco. The Associate/Full Specialist will join a team that provides support across 3 newly merged microscopy core facilities on the Mission Bay campus of UCSF including the Center for Advanced Light Microscopy at UCSF, the Center for Advance Multiphoton Microscopy, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute Microscopy core. These 3 facilities provide access to 14 state-of-the-art microscopes for use by the UCSF community and serve over 400 scientists a year.

The successful candidate will be one of the initial points of contact for users seeking to use the core facility and will be responsible for advising them on the choice of microscope for their experiment, provide training on the microscopes, and assist in troubleshooting. Strong technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to customer service is extremely important. This individual will also be responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance of microscopes, testing of microscope performance, and troubleshooting problems with the microscopes. In addition there will be opportunities for helping to expand educational opportunities for microscopy techniques and image analysis to the UCSF community, allowing us to provide additional support to our user base. Within these parameters, the successful candidate will have considerable freedom which could include collaborations with users.

A PhD degree in biology, physics, optics, or a related field is preferred. Previous experience with microscopy is required. Previous experience with equipment maintenance, image analysis and training in a core facility environment is desirable. Candidates with experience in multiphoton microscopy, programming, or development of microscopy hardware is preferred. Candidates should have strong organizational skills, be flexible and able to prioritize tasks, have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess at minimum a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization. Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten years of experience in the relevant specialization. Compensation will be determined based on experience.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500-$181,800.
