Job Summary

ANSIRH is seeking faculty members to join our team and pursue a program of research of their own design within our program, in line with our mission and vision. We welcome applications from individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in research and medicine. We seek social scientists or clinical researchers (e.g., PhD, DrPH, DSW, ScD, EdD or clinical degree (DNP, MD) with research experience) with expertise in quantitative or qualitative social science research, including in health behavior, demography, epidemiology, sociology, psychology, anthropology, health economics, health services research, program evaluation, medicine, nursing, and/or related disciplines. The faculty member must demonstrate an established focus on sexual and reproductive health in their work or a commitment to expanding their research into investigating sexual and reproductive health. We are particularly interested in researchers who focus on racial equity or justice in their work or involve communities of color directly in their research (e.g., via community-based participatory research), though these are not requirements. Our hope is to hire a faculty member who will bring their unique perspectives and research questions to drive ANSIRH’s research in important new directions, while also contributing a synergy with ANSIRH faculty to strengthen our program’s production of scientific knowledge related to people’s sexual and reproductive lives.

Funding

This is a soft money appointment (i.e., funded through grants) at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank; a successful candidate needs to have full funding for three years and will need to describe and confirm their funding portfolio. Academic rank and series will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $121,100-$320,100. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

ANSIRH is a program of The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health and is situated within a clinical division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF, the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) Division, affording opportunities for close collaboration between clinicians and social scientists. These groups and institutions are described below:

The Bixby Center

The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health merges social science with clinical science to improve reproductive and sexual health for women in the U.S. and around the world. Founded in 1999, the Bixby Center includes more than 150 talented faculty, fellows, and staff representing a range of disciplines, including nursing, medicine, sociology, anthropology, demography, epidemiology, law, and public health, and hailing from numerous UCSF departments and institutes, such as the Departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, Pediatrics, and Family and Community Medicine; the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies and Global Health Sciences.

Bixby comprises diverse programs including ANSIRH, Beyond the Pill, Fellowship in Family Planning, Innovating Education in Reproductive Health, Ryan Residency Program, as well as international programs such as Safe Motherhood, Family AIDS Care & Education Services (FACES) in Kenya and the UCSF-University of Zimbabwe Collaborative Research Programme. Bixby conducts research, training, evaluation, and policy analysis in the areas of family planning, abortion, adolescent reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, and maternal health. Over the years, Bixby’s work has changed policy, clinical care, medical education, and laws.

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob/Gyn & RS) is a major academic department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research, and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) campuses, the new Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital at Mission Bay, and satellite locations throughout the Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $77.2 million. The Department has 102 full-time faculty, 136 other academic appointees, 39 post-doctoral fellows, 20 clinical fellows, 36 residents, 136 voluntary clinical faculty, and 266 staff.
