cryo-EM Facility – Associate/Full Specialist
Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

We seek to hire a cryo-EM Tomography expert, at the level of Associate Specialist or Specialist. The cryo-EM facility at UCSF is directed by David Agard, Yifan Cheng and Klim Verba. Our facility currently houses a ThermoFisher FEI Titan Krios with a post-GIF K3, a Talos Arctica with a K3 camera, and a special narrow polepiece Glacios equipped with a K3. For FIB milling, we have an Aquilos 2 cryo-FIB-SEM with iFLIM. The facility is supervised by a manager who oversees microscope maintenance and an IT specialist who oversees data management. The facility has over 100 regular users and is continually training new users.

The Associate Specialist or Specialist will focus on cryo-EM Tomography and FIB-SEM, providing support and training for the growing UCSF cryo-ET community. In additional, they will help with the collection of high-quality cryo-ET data. They will facilitate users carrying out sample preparation and data acquisition for cryo-ET. In addition, they will participate in various Cryo-ET collaborative projects, particularly from nonstructural biology laboratories.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in a biological or materials science (or related field) or five to ten years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in a biological or materials science (or related field) or ten or more years of research experience.
  • 5+ years of previous experience in all aspects of cryo-EM, including operating high-end instruments, such as Titan Krios, Arctica and Galacios.
  • At least 1 year experience in cryo-ET data collection and processing and FIB-SEM operation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in all perspective of cryo-EM, both single particle and cryo-ET.
  • Good biochemistry and/or cell biology skills.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500-$181,800.
