Position description

Yu Lab – Junior Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Anesthesia and Perioperative Care

Description

The Yu lab is seeking candidates to join our group as a Junior Specialist (Research Technician). Our lab focuses on functional molecular/cellular mechanisms that underlie pain processing. We take a multidisciplinary approach, involving molecular, neuroanatomical, pharmacological, behavioral approaches in mice and patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) derived disease model to address these pain processing mechanisms.

The candidates will be expected to contribute to this research by working on new and ongoing projects, one involving the contribution of neuroimmune interaction to the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain using both chemical and genetic approaches. The second research project involves pharmacological evaluation in the mouse of the pain-relieving effects of different novel compounds. The animal’s behavior is examined using different tests of heat and mechanical sensitivity in both the control and injury models. Additionally, the junior specialist will assist with managing day-to-day lab operations and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen.

This position is an excellent opportunity to gain basic and translational research experience in preparation for application to a PhD or MD program. Depending on performance and workload, co-authorship on scientific publications will be possible.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.

  • Applicants must meet the requirements by the time of appointment.
  • Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with behavioral testing of rodents

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
