Carnevale Lab Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist Position Post

Area of Specialization / Responsibilities:
The Carnevale lab at UCSF is seeking highly motivated applicants for a full-time position as a Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist in our group. The primary focus of our laboratory is applying CRISPR screening and targeted genetic engineering strategies to develop new T cell therapies for cancer treatment. We work with a variety of systems to model the interactions between T cells, cancer cells, and other immune cells both in vitro and in vivo. Our goal is to determine how to rewire immune cells so that they can more effectively drive aggressive cancers into remission. As an Oncologist here at UCSF, I am also interested in translating our mechanistic insights from the laboratory to the clinic.

Our work draws from the fields of T cell immunology, cancer biology, and CRISPR genetic engineering. As part of the Genomic Immunology Initiative, our laboratory is part of an exciting network of collaborators across UCSF and the Gladstone Institute working to advance our understanding of immune cell biology and the therapeutic applications of this knowledge. Thus, there are ample opportunities to engage with the broader community on joint projects to advance this common goal. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing work in these areas, with specific duties including CRISPR gene engineering, pooled genetic perturbation screens, T cell culture, mouse handling and tumor models, FACS analysis, and a variety of genomics techniques. This position represents an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of translational research in immunotherapy in a highly collaborative scientific environment.

The specialist hired into this role will both assist with ongoing experiments and, depending on the candidate’s skill level, conduct independent research under the guidance of Dr. Carnevale and other members of the Lab. The Specialist will learn and utilize a variety of research techniques and have the opportunity to present their work and co-author publications.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Applying a range of molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, DNA and RNA isolation, and protein expression analysis.
• Conducting xenograft studies of T cell therapies against a variety of cancer cell lines in mice.
• Performing flow cytometry.
• Performing CRISPR gene engineering experiments which will include techniques such as viral infection and electroporation.
• Performing gene transfer studies using lentiviral infection of human cell cultures.
• Performing library preparation for next generation sequencing.
• Culturing primary human T cells and established human cancer cell lines.
• When needed, assisting with mouse colony management, including setting up breeding, weaning, and tagging.
• Assisting with lab maintenance duties

Required Qualifications
• Must be able/willing to work with mouse colonies.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least 5-10 years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Prior experience working with biological samples in a laboratory setting.
• Some evening and weekend hours are required (not often).
• Ability to comply with policies and procedures.
• New graduates with a commitment to learning are welcome to apply.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in basic aspects of biochemistry and cell biology including observing sterile technique for working with and passaging cell lines, counting cells, and preparing lysates.
• Experience with molecular cloning and mouse handling (not required).
• Experience with mammalian tissue culture and flow cytometry
• Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends based on project needs
• Computer software skills (MS Office, PRISM, Benchling, Flowjo, Illustrator)
• Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction. Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.

A 2-year commitment is preferred. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.
