Position description

Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full Specialist - McManus Lab

The McManus lab is looking for a candidate to be open to learning new methods and must have excellent communication skills, as this position requires teamwork in a laboratory environment. The position represents an excellent opportunity for basic laboratory and research skills in a dynamic environment. The successful applicant will be an energetic, team player, self-directed learner with a keen interest in research.

Under direct supervision and with guidance from senior lab members, the employee will be expected to perform experiments to support lab members research. The specific types of experiments will vary and include assisting high throughput microscopy and the use state of the other technologies located in the PCAT (robotics, cytometry, plate reader, etc). Assist the PI in overseeing ViraCore activities. This duty will involve teaching cell culture, virus production, and related tasks to ViraCore staff members.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in Neuroscience, Behavior, Physiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related science or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master’s degree in Neuroscience, Behavior, Physiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related science or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Neuroscience, Behavior, Physiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related science or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in Neuroscience, Behavior, Physiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related science or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicants must meet requirements by the time of hire.
  • Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
  • Experience in basic molecular biology protocols, including PCR and qPCR (may be that which is acquired while in school).
  • Experience with Biomek robotics instrumentation.
  • Experience and/or motivation to work with small animals/mouse colony.
  • Experience with high content microscopy.
  • Expertise in cell culture and lentivirus preparation.
  • Knowledge/experience with basic techniques/methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Practical laboratory experience, such as benchwork in biomedical research laboratory (may include undergraduate experience.
  • Effective use of laboratory instruments and their maintenance; knowledge of biomedical and biotechnological techniques and methodologies.
  • Basic understanding of trouble-shooting experiments and problem solving.
  • Data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, initiative to work independently and efficiently.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot experiments.
  • Ability to analyze data in spreadsheets.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize responsibilities pertaining to multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic skills in statistical analysis and the use of relevant statistical software such as R.
  • Ability to prepare scientific figures using Power Point, Adobe Illustrator, and/or similar programs.
