Position description

UCSF Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist Position - McManus Lab
The McManus Lab at University of California, San Francisco is seeking a Lab Specialist at the Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full rank, depending on qualifications. One focus of our research is to determine the mechanisms for gene regulation and function in mouse models, illuminating connections between genes and development/disease. The candidate will be working in a small team who are engaged in basic research.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, plasmid preparation and basic cloning.
  • Oversee transgenic mouse colony maintenance.
  • Perform dissections and collect embryos and adult mouse tissues as needed.
  • Record keeping and data entry.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biological/biochemical science or related field or must have at least four years of research experience in a related field.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree in biological/biochemical science or related field or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in biological/biochemical science or related field or must have at least five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in biological/biochemical science or related field or must have at least ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Appointees at the Associate and Full level must have significant record of academic accomplishment including published or in-press publication, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
  • Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Strong organization, and oral/written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in animal husbandry.
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic molecular biology protocols.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
