Specialist- Clelland Lab
Department of Neurology
University of California, San Francisco

The Clelland lab is creating novel gene therapies to treat or cure neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS and FTD. We are hiring a particle maker to participate on a multi-disciplinary research team to develop novel delivery particles for CNS gene therapy. This person will synthesize new lipid nanoparticles and peptide conjugates to Cas9. Using our validated screening platforms in human iPSC derived cells, animal models and human tissue, particles will be screened for ability to deliver cargo to post-mitotic cells, edit post-mitotic cells, and distribute throughout the CNS. Particle maker will work closely with team members on the screening process. Multiple routes of administration will be tested. They will be responsible for understanding the particle landscape and literature. They will collect data, analyze, and validate particle size, purity, composition, storage parameters and analyze outcome measures on the above screening platforms. The particle maker will be proactive, self-motivated with strong critical thinking, analytic and problem-solving skills. This is an exciting and interdisciplinary team working on one of the most important challenges in translational medicine. The ideal candidate for this position has a background in lipid and/or peptide synthesis that may derive from a variety of backgrounds (chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, etc. in academia or industry). We have additional programs to develop entrepreneurial skillsets. We have experience mentoring people from diverse backgrounds in a welcoming environment. Required Qualifications:

  • Junior Specialist- A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in scientific discipline or at least four years of laboratory or industry-based experience.
  • Assistant Specialist- A master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialists- A master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in scientific discipline or five to ten years of research experience.
  • Full Specialists- A terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in scientific discipline or ten or more years of research experience.
  • Experience synthesizing lipid nanoparticles or peptides
  • Acquiring and analyzing data in a research laboratory setting
  • Self-motivated with strong communication and problem solving skills
  • Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
  • Candidate’s CV must list qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or Master’s with industry experience
  • Publications record in scientific journals
