Director of Research, Osher Center for Integrative Health

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Osher Center for Integrative Health and the School of Medicine Dean’s Office seek an outstanding individual for the position of Director of Research at the Osher Center for Integrative Health. The faculty appointment will be in a School of Medicine department to be determined based on the area of the candidate’s expertise. The Research Director is a full-time (1.0FTE) faculty member at UCSF and reports to the Osher Center Director. Applicants are expected to have extramural grant funding and to lead an independent research program.
This position is part of a faculty cluster hire to build UCSF Osher Center capacity in integrative health equity through innovative faculty who bring diverse backgrounds, research, and clinical expertise. The UCSF Osher Center, founded in 1998, is renowned for its excellence and commitment to the highest quality integrative patient care, education, and research. The Osher Center for Integrative Health advances the science of integrative health by conducting and disseminating rigorous research. We focus on all facets of patients’ health and wellness — biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. We seek to improve our understanding of how treatments work, and how well they work. Our goals are to strengthen the base of scientific evidence for integrative medicine and support the inclusion of effective approaches in medical care. The Osher Center Research Program includes ten faculty, four non-faculty academics, seven research fellows, and eleven staff, with a yearly budget of $4.5 million.
The ideal candidate for Director of Research is an academic researcher at the Associate Professor level or above with a strong record of leadership, scholarship, and innovation. The successful candidate recognizes the value of teamwork in an interprofessional environment and balancing multiple missions. Successful candidates must have earned a doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree at the start of the appointment (e.g., PhD, MD).
Job Description and Accountabilities
The Director of Research at the Osher Center for Integrative Health is responsible for leading and growing the Osher Center’s Research Program, and is expected to lead in a manner that contributes to the overall success of the Osher Center for Integrative Health, the School of Medicine, and UCSF.
The Director of Research is required to:
• Work closely with both the Osher Center Director and Associate Director of the Research Program to provide overall strategic leadership for the program, including setting program goals and priorities, identifying program opportunities and challenges, and monitoring progress toward achieving these goals.
• Promote and expand diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, hiring and retention, and community building.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to Osher Center research faculty, non-faculty academics, learners, and staff to ensure effective management and a healthy and productive work environment.
• Meet regularly with research faculty and staff supervisors, including conducting annual reviews; meet monthly with the Center Director.
• Provide strong financial stewardship, including effectively managing the budget, responsibly advocating for appropriate resources, and participating in philanthropic efforts.
• Collaboratively oversee allocation of all types of resources to achieve goals for the Research Program.
• Prepare reports on the Research Program as needed for the Osher Center annual report and other reporting needs.
• Participate in Center-wide leadership activities, including Executive Committee meetings.
• Contribute to the excellence of the Osher Center, including by supporting collaborations among members of the Clinical, Education, and Research Programs.
• Participate actively in the Osher Collaborative for Integrative Health, the international network of eleven Osher Centers that amplifies collective work in studying, teaching, and practicing integrative healthcare.
• Identify and nurture collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations both within and outside of UCSF who can contribute to the mission of the Osher Center.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $118,100-$411,500. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
