Position description

The Ashworth Laboratory at UCSF is looking for talented scientists to join our team as a Junior/Assistant Research Specialist. Our lab utilizes functional genomics, cell biology, CRISPR and small molecule screens as well as mouse modeling approaches to explore how genetics influence tumor response. Our current research is focused on finding new ways to leverage this information to develop novel cancer therapies. We have ongoing projects to investigate mechanisms of response and resistance to both small molecule inhibitors as well as immune cells. We are also engaged in multiple drug discovery efforts with both academic and industry partners.

The position is for at least two years and is a great opportunity for anyone looking to gain research experience before applying to graduate, medical, or MD/PhD programs.

The role of the Specialist will be to:

  • Work independently and collaboratively to develop and implement in vitro and cellular assays to test small molecule inhibitors.
  • Perform experiments aimed at uncovering novel genetic vulnerabilities and drug sensitivities in cancer cells.
  • Assist with ordering, maintenance of lab equipment and other lab organization.

Required qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master’s degree or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
  • Applicants need to be self-motivated, fast learners, critical thinkers, and enthusiastic about science and medicine.
  • One year or more of research experience in a wet lab setting.
  • Ability to work as a member of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to learn complex tasks with general instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experiments.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to document experiments.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written).
  • Experience performing basic molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, and protein expression analyses.
  • Applicants’ materials must list current, eligible, and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with mammalian cell lines in culture.
  • Hands on experience with high-throughput imaging and downstream analyses.
  • Hands on experience with CRISPR-editing and pooled CRISPR screening techniques.
  • Experience performing FACS.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000 - $63,000.
