Position description

The Ashworth Laboratory at UCSF has openings for talented candidates to join our team as an Associate/Full Research Specialist. Our lab utilizes functional genomics, cell biology, CRISPR and small molecule screens as well as mouse modeling approaches to explore how genetics influence tumor response. Our current research is focused on finding new ways to leverage this information to develop novel cancer therapies. We have ongoing projects to investigate mechanisms of response and resistance to both small molecule inhibitors as well as immune cells. We are also engaged in multiple drug discovery efforts with both academic and industry partners.

The role of the Specialist will be to:

  • Work independently and collaboratively to develop and implement in vitro and cellular assays to test small molecule inhibitors.
  • Conduct research aimed at discovering novel genetic vulnerabilities and drug sensitivities in cancer cells.
  • Train and mentor PhD students, postdocs, and other laboratory staff.
  • Assist with ordering, maintenance of lab equipment and other lab organization.

Required qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or be in the process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or must have at least five to ten years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess (or be in the process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or must have at least ten or more years of research experience.
  • Applicant’s materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicants must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experiments.
  • At least 3 years working full time in a wet lab environment.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with mammalian cell lines in culture.
  • Experience performing basic molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation, PCR, and protein expression analyses.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise in cancer biology.
  • Experience performing gene transfer studies using lentiviral infection of human cell in culture.
  • Experience with high-throughput imaging and downstream analyses.
  • Experience with CRISPR-editing and pooled CRISPR screening techniques.
  • Programming and/or bioinformatics skills.
  • A PhD in cell biology or related field.
