The Turnbaugh lab is seeking a Junior Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. This work will focus on the study of the microbiome using Gnotobiotic mice, and will include performing advanced experimental techniques to execute experiments (for example, the Specialist may administer experimental agents via oral, i.p., or subcutaneous routes, and follow up with experimental disease scoring and tracking, dissection and processing of tissues, or other techniques deemed experimentally necessary). Lab techniques performed by the Specialist include (but are not limited to): DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, microbial cultures, gram staining, and genotyping. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to novel projects advancing research and development of Gnotobiotic tools. For example, the candidate will work on the development of novel models (such as allergy and asthma) in sterile mice and the translation of embryo-transfer techniques into a germ-free setting, among other projects. An exceptional candidate will move these projects forward independently, helping the lab to develop and test new ideas. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations within the Gnotobiotic core facility, perform general lab duties, and be a positive lab citizen.
