Position description

Bikle Lab – Associate Research Scientist

The Bikle Lab is recruiting an Associate Research Scientist with experience in bone histology, histochemistry and lineage tracing in bioengineered mice to work on a project focused on the effect of abaloparatide on fracture healing. The incumbent will perform tibial fractures of mice with various genotypes, evaluate the fractured bones at different times following fracture using methods including histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, quantitative computed tomography, lineage tracing, cell culture, and genome analysis analyzing the effect of abaloparatide on these processes.

A primary role in manuscript preparation is expected. The job duties/responsibilities for this position include:
• Fracturing the tibiae of bioengineered mice
• Evaluating the tibiae at different times after fracture by various histologic and molecular means
• Evaluating the effect of abaloparatide and other drugs on the healing process
• Culturing bone cells to evaluate proliferation and differentiation
• Using next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing to determine the molecular changes during fracture repair

New techniques and protocols will also be initiated when required for the execution of the research project. This position requires the ability to perform experiments independently and in cooperation with collaborators, discuss and analyze data with collaborators and research supervisors, and perform other duties as assigned. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to cutting edge translational research and clinical medicine.

Required qualifications:
• A candidate for a title in this series must have earned a doctorate or its equivalent.
• Expertise in bone histomorphometry, immunofluorescence, qCT, bone cell culture, and molecular assessment of bone and bone cells
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Careful attention to detail.

Preferred qualifications:
• Experience with Xray CT and structural analysis of bone
• Potential to develop a sustained source of research funding.

Appointees in the Professional Research series must demonstrate continuous and effective engagement in independent and creative research activity of high quality and significance, equivalent to that expected of the Professor series. Proposed merit increases and promotions in the Professional Research series shall be reviewed with the same rigor accorded to proposed merits and promotions in the Professor series. Appointees are expected to engage in University and/or public service, such as service on research review boards.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04519. Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
