Position description

Assistant Specialist- Wilder Lab

Nature Of Research
The research laboratory of Dr. Catera Wilder in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is engaged in groundbreaking projects focused on understanding the complex, spatiotemporal regulation of immune defense and pro-inflammatory responses during respiratory illnesses.

Immunopathogenic responses occur when host defense responses including inflammatory responses result in damaged tissue that is not quickly repaired. While the pathogenic effects of an exacerbated inflammatory response can be defined, the mechanisms that initiate and propagate such responses are less so. Misregulation of cytokines (i.e. interferons) that regulate host anti-viral defense responses has been associated with increased disease severity. In order to determine how anti-viral defense responses may be regulating inflammation and immunopathogenesis, a detailed investigation into the control mechanisms of anti-viral defense at various cellular levels needs to be implemented.

The lab is seeking to recruit an Assistant Specialist with expertise in the theory of and analytic methods of biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field with experience in animal handling, fluorescence microscopy, and next generation sequencing. The hire needs to have a passion about scientific research with the willingness and ability to learn, take risks, and work well with others. The hire would lead projects as well as assist with the training of junior team members.

The vision of the Wilder Lab is to understand how lung epithelial cells control antiviral and inflammatory responses through regulation of interferon signaling. This knowledge will be used to develop quantitative models of immune responses and develop model systems that promote anti-viral immune responses.

Outline Of Responsibilities

• Utilize techniques involved with cloning, cell culture, in vitro and in vivo analysis, live-cell imaging, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis.
• Maintain mouse colonies, handle and genotype mice, and assist with experiments.
• Assist other lab members with their projects.

Qualifications
• BA/BS in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
