Position description

Associate Specialist Position in Mass Spectrometry-Based Comparative Proteomics, UCSF Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry Core Facility

School of Medicine
University of California, San Francisco

The University of California, San Francisco Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry (MS) Core Facility invites applications for an Associate Specialist position in the field of comparative proteomics. The position requires a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in chemistry, biology, biochemistry (or related field) or five to ten years of relevant experience. The selected candidate must have expertise as a mass spectrometrist in the field of comparative proteomics.

The candidate will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of MS-based applications for the analysis of proteins/peptides with an emphasis on protein identification and quantification. The position requires strong analytical instrumentation skills including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mass spectrometers and nanoflow HPLC systems. The candidate is required to have experience in proteomics data acquisition and analysis including label-free (SWATH, spectral counting) and absolute quantification (MRM/SRM) workflows, statistics, and network/pathway analysis. Familiarity with ProteinPilot and Proteome Discoverer software packages is highly desirable. In addition, the candidate must be skilled in protein/peptide sample preparation techniques including BCA/NanoDrop protein quantification, SDS-PAGE, and in-gel and solution proteolytic digestion protocols. The candidate must be a self-starter and be able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

The Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry Core Facility is a designated enabling technology center that serves as a mass spectrometry resource for the UCSF proteomics research community. Highly trained staff operate and maintain the instrumentation, along with associated bioinformatics hardware and software that allows the facility to offer a comprehensive suite of MS-based proteomic services.

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $67,400-78,500.
