Position description

Specialist – Protein Structure and Proteomics (Krogan Lab, UCSF)

You will be working on a project focused on studying protein interactions and structures from endogenously tagged and purified protein complexes. This role is an excellent opportunity to learn a number of valuable, cutting-edge techniques in CRISPR-based knock-in (CRISPR-ki) genomics, cell biology, and proteomics while working with a dynamic and interdisciplinary research team. The specific role(s) of the specialist will include: 1) validating CRISPR-ki cell lines and primary cells; 2) affinity purification, chemical cross-linking, and sample preparation for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis; and 3) enzymatic and virological-based assays for functional characterization of protein components.

The Krogan Lab (http://kroganlab.ucsf.edu) is a highly collaborative laboratory focusing on the molecular networks underpinning infectious disease, carcinogenesis, and psychiatric disorders. We are hiring 2 full-time specialists for this project with qualifications from junior to full specialist (see qualifications below). Candidate’s CV and/or cover letter must state required qualifications (or if pending) upon submission. Candidates must meet all Required Qualifications by the time of hire.

Required Qualifications:
• Jr. Specialist rank: Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or an appropriate scientific field.
• Assistant/Associate Rank: Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree and 5-10 years of work experience in a relevant field of biological research.
• Full Specialist rank: PhD or 10+ years of work experience in a relevant field of biological research.
• Experience in the essential molecular biology techniques of molecular cloning, PCR, and western blotting.
• Experience in cell/tissue culture.
• Able to work independently and meet deadlines; recognize and resolve problems while maintaining a high level of organization.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills to interface with a highly collaborative cross-discipline team to review and analyze results.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with affinity purifications of proteins.
• Experience in preparation of protein samples for mass spectrometric analysis.
• Experience with chemical cross-linking.
• Experience with peptide enrichment techniques (e.g. TiO2, click chemistry).
• Experience with CRISPR.
• Experience with mass spectrometry and/or mass spectrometry data.
• Experience with managing large datasets and/or databases.
