Specialist – Ho lab

We are seeking applications for a Specialist in the Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full rank. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Winson Ho M.D. , the Specialist will apply cutting-edge approaches in caner immunology research to develop immunotherapy for brain tumor. The selected candidate will contribute to a team in the performance of laboratory and investigative procedures by conducting a variety of experimental techniques such as molecular cloning, cell culture (cell lines and primary cells), qPCR, WB, flow cytometry and animal work. We will provide technical training, and the successful candidate should be able to learn new cell biological assays quickly and execute them. Data will need to be collected, verified, recorded, and compiled in support of research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performing various investigative procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment after training. Examples of equipment routinely used are: a. Plate readers for absorbance or luminescence-based assays, b. PCR machines for gene amplification and cloning, c. Flow cytometers and cell sorters for single cell analysis and isolation.
  2. Perform animal in vivo experiments after training.
  3. Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs and reports. May use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports.
  4. Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records.
  5. May order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies.
  6. Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
  7. May maintain cell lines for experimental purposes.
  8. Read literature applicable to research areas as required.

Required Qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a Bachelor degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field or four years of relevant research experience.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field or related field or five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Candidate must have obtained the degree requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire.
• Applicants’ materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
• The successful candidate will have at least 1 year of laboratory experience relevant to the position.
• Generally experienced in job duties and in the principles and practices associated with those duties with an understanding of the underlying scientific principles.
• Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed.
• Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
• Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction. Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Knowledge of Immunology is preferable but not required.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
