Position Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a full-time Clinical Pathologist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, to serve as the Transfusion Medical Director. Applicants must hold an M.D., D.O, or an M.D./Ph.D. degree. At the time of hire, candidates must be eligible for California medical licensure and be board certified/eligible in Clinical Pathology (CP) or Anatomic & Clinical Pathology (AP/CP). Candidate’s application materials must state qualifications (or if pending) upon submission. Subspecialty board certification or eligibility in Transfusion Medicine is desirable.

This position is at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in the HS Clinical, Clinical X, In-Residence, or Ladder rank series, which emphasizes strong commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching (at both resident/fellow and medical student levels) is preferred. Clinical/translational research or other scholarly/creative activities are expected for applicants in the Clinical X series.

The successful candidate will serve as the CLIA Clinical Consultant and Technical Supervisor for the Transfusion Service and Blood Bank of the Clinical Laboratory at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). Responsibilities will include providing clinical consultation for transfusion issues at a Level I Trauma Center, assuring appropriate blood product utilization, and assuring accurate and timely performance and reporting of laboratory services offered by this lab division in a manner that meets accreditation standards and that complies with applicable laws and regulations. The ZSFG Blood Bank performs immunohematology testing and assures the safe issuance of blood components to support transfusion services. The Clinical Laboratory at ZSFG provides laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients of ZSFG, Laguna Honda Hospital, District Health Centers, and other facilities under the auspices of the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The Transfusion Service Medical Director will also serve on the ZSFG Transfusion Subcommittee, direct the ZSFG Tissue Bank, advise and support clinical research activities related to transfusion at ZSFG, and provide cross-coverage of transfusion services at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland in partnership with their pathology faculty.

This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan (https://ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/apm/apm-670.pdf) which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
