Position description

UCSF Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) Director
Job Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine (DOM) seeks an outstanding leader for the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) within the Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM).

DGIM was founded in 1980 and has grown to include over 70 faculty members, 64 internal medicine residents (including 30 primary care residents), 50 campus and 70 practice staff. Our general medicine practice serves a diverse population of about 25,000 patients and we are proud of the quality care we deliver to patients with complex chronic illness and the high marks we receive in patient satisfaction scores. DGIM faculty researchers focus on a broad spectrum of disease and population-based research including health communication, tobacco control, geriatric care, health informatics, genetic epidemiology, cancer prevention, health disparities, cardiovascular and other chronic disease, women’s health, health technology and medical decision-making. DGIM teaches outpatient general internal medicine to residents and students through continuity and urgent care experiences. The culture of DGIM is based on humanism, integrity in science and patient care, commitment to social justice, value added in diversity, and collective responsibilities and rewards. The Division is committed to academic, clinical, and educational excellence.

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) was established by Steve Schroeder, MD, in January 2003 with a mission to work with clinical organizations, governmental agencies, and advocacy groups to encourage smokers to quit and to maximize the odds that those quit attempts will succeed. The SCLC was initially funded with a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and has garnered significant support from the American Legacy Foundation (now known as Truth Initiative). It currently has a five-year grant (2018-23) from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a National Center for Excellence in Tobacco-Free Recovery; a five-year (2018-2023) grant from the state of California to help substance abuse and mental health treatment facilities go smoke-free, and their clients quit tobacco use; and multiple other smaller grants. The Center has a current endowment of $4.7 million. The academic home for the SCLC is in DGIM of UCSF Health. The Director is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Medicine and reports to the Chief of DGIM. In addition to the Director, the Center currently has seven full-time staff, including a Deputy Director.

Applicants must have an MD (board-certified) and/or PhD, and should have demonstrated experience and ability in smoking cessation and in working with both public and private organizations. They should preferably be eligible for a full professor appointment in DOM, although an outstanding senior associate professor might be considered. The position comes with a Distinguished Professorship (equivalent to an endowed professorship). Successful candidates should have a background in policy, and experience working with both internal and external organizations, at the local, state, and national level, to enact policy change.
