PTC Specialist

A position is available in the Academic Specialist Track for a scientist (MS or PhD) to join a team undertaking cutting-edge preclinical studies in cancer research within the NCI-sponsored Preclinical Therapeutics Core (PTC) facility at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).

The PTC is a fee-for-service shared resource for UCSF investigators that provides expertise in rodent-based in vivo models and small animal imaging. The PTC team works closely with academic and industry clients to help design and execute rodent-based studies, typically using mouse tumor models.

The PTC is a part of the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific background, with preclinical research experience. He/she will be self-motivated, adaptable to change and have excellent communication skills. He/she will have the ability to work at high standards and to make independent decisions. He/she must be able to work well within a team, and be willing to work flexible hours including occasional weekends/holidays.

The candidate must have at least three years of prior rodent handling experience (mouse/rat preferable), good computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications.

The ideal candidate will have understanding of the theory and practice of in vivo imaging platforms including optical (IVIS), ultrasound, and uCT imaging and CT-guided irradiation.

Hire will be appointed at the assistant, associate or full Specialist level, dependent on experience and skill set. Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank must possess at minimum a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in a biomedical sciences subject or at least five years of experience in preclinical research. Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (PhD, MD or DVM) in a biomedical sciences subject or ten or more years of experience in the preclinical research.

This new hire will report to the PTC Manager, and will assist the Manager in study design, communication with PTC clients, administrative and animal-based tasks, providing oversight to a variety of in vivo imaging devices, and ensuring accurate and safe practices within the core.

Specific tasks will include:
• Execution of a variety of preclinical experimental techniques (e.g. Administration of substances through various routes (intra-venous, intra-peritoneal, oral gavage), tumor implantation, body weight and tumor size measurement, tumor and tissue collection, surgical methods, data analysis)
• Working knowledge and skills in biosample (e.g, blood) collection, PK, PD, and drug tolerability studies, as well as anti-tumor drug efficacy procedures
• Performance of basic laboratory methods required for formulation of drugs and vehicle for in vivo delivery
• Sterile propagation of cells in culture,
• Training of staff and PTC clients in multiple aspects of animal husbandry, surgery and technical support
• Creation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for good animal practices in accordance with IACUC guidelines
• Use of StudyLog data management system for recording study design notes, dose tracking, clinical observations and collected study data
• Operation of and provision of instrument oversight and training for one or more in vivo imaging devices, including ultrasound, micro-CT imaging and CT-guided irradiation.
