University of California, San Francisco
Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

The Goodarzi Lab at UCSF’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is an interdisciplinary research group focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis. We take advantage of state-of-the-art computational and experimental techniques to advance our knowledge of the post-transcriptional regulatory pathways that drive cancer progression.

We seek to hire a junior specialist to assist our group in carrying out experiments and lab tasks. Responsibilities include performing mammalian cell culture, assisting with molecular, quantitative, and mouse experiments, managing day-to-day lab operations, and ordering supplies. Through this work, we expect that our junior specialist will play an integral role in advancing our knowledge of cancer biology. This position is ideal for those graduates in biology or organic chemistry who seek to receive training and gain experience in research settings prior to joining a graduate program or attending Medical school.

We are seeking at least a two year commitment. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research may be available. At the conclusion of their tenure, the successful candidate will have deep proficiency in molecular cancer biology.

*Required Qualifications

  • 6 months of lab experience in a research setting (chemistry and/or biology)
  • BA/BS (or in process) in Biology, Chemistry or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, basic techniques and methods required by the position, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage time and multitask effectively.
  • Ability to adhere to all campus safety policies.

*Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in organic synthesis.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience with flow cytometry, microscopy, high-throughput cloning, and/or next generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Experience with PCR and primer design.
  • Experience working with mice.
  • Basic exposure to scientific computation (i.e. Linux/Unix, Matlab, Python, Image Processing software).

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
