Position description

RONALD D. MILLER DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF ANESTHESIA AND PERIOPERATIVE CARE

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO

For more than half a century, the UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care has been making groundbreaking clinical discoveries and training generations of leaders in both academic anesthesia (24 chairpersons to date) and private practice.

Ronald D. Miller was a visionary chair of the department, leading it to international prominence in research, education, and clinical care. He established a translational research fellowship while recruiting leading investigators to our faculty to ensure we grew a research portfolio that reached across specialties and around the world. As Dr. Miller said recently, “It’s still of prime importance to think big and dream.” We should honor his service and his vision.

Thus, with generous donations from within and outside of our department, we have established the Ronald D. Miller Distinguished Professorship of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care. The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at the University of California, San Francisco, therefore wishes to recruit a full-time faculty member at the associate or full professor rank to serve as the Ronald D. Miller Distinguished Professor of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care. The holder of the Ronald D. Miller Distinguished Professor of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care will advance Dr. Miller’s deep commitment to clinical research in anesthesia and to excellence in the training and mentoring of physicians. This person must have a strong track record of peer-reviewed funding in clinical/translational research, and an international reputation for research leadership and mentorship.

Applicants must have at least ten years of postgraduate training, certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology, and eligibility for California Medical Licensure. Applicants must possess the basic qualifications at the time of hire.

In addition to the holder’s own research program, duties will include: research administration and supervision of medical and administrative staff. In addition, demonstrated abilities in program strategic planning and evaluation, clinical research direction, community outreach, and organizational administration will be required. The Ronald D. Miller Distinguished Professor will serve as the lead for managing research financial resources and their allocation, research project prioritization, and activities related to quality improvement and compliance with accreditation bodies. Finally, he/she will foster an environment of teaching, learning and discovery.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
