Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an experienced research scientist in the Specialist Series. The director of the IND is Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Prusiner. This position will be part of a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities in the new Sandler Neurosciences Building on the UCSF Mission Bay campus.

Responsibilities for this position are to design and create cellular models of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and translate these tools into screening assays for the existing drug discovery platform at the IND. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in assay development and pharmaceutical research.

The candidate must have experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, and preferably a team focused on developing therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate must have strong practical experience in assay development and optimization, with an emphasis on high-content imaging. He or she must have excellent communication and organization skills and work well in a team environment.

Required qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree in Biology or Biotechnology (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in a drug discovery environment developing and conducting screening assays with practical examples of how these assays advanced drug discovery programs.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
