Department of Radiation Oncology
Instructor, Assistant Professor (In Residence, HS Clinical or Clinical X)
Division of Medical Physics

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, seeks to recruit an outstanding faculty candidate at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level for the Division of Medical Physics, capable of performing at a high level of productivity in both research and clinical areas. The department of Radiation Oncology at UCSF has state-of-the art clinical facilities and an emphasis on innovation and excellence in patient care and science.

The primary responsibility of the candidate will be to develop and support advanced computational methods as applied to radiotherapy and oncology informatics. The candidate will participate in the design, development and deployment of analytical tools, databases and user interfaces, and will work to integrate these and other systems within a multivendor environment including electronic medical records/oncology information systems, imaging and treatment planning systems, and various public and institutional data repositories. The candidate will establish unique lines of oncology informatics research, and work closely with faculty to facilitate meaningful gains in predicting and monitoring response to treatment. The candidate will also contribute to various clinical medical physics services and assist with other clinical activities across the three department locations, as required and commensurate of the position. The candidate will be expected to teach in medical physics courses provided by the Department of Radiation Oncology for medical and physics students, residents and fellows, as well as contribute to continuing medical education efforts including the departmental annual scientific conference and scientific participation at scientific and professional conferences.

Candidates must have a minimum of one to two years of experience in an academic radiation oncology department; have a strong research record and commitment to education; and qualify for appointment at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor. A doctoral degree in a physics or a related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates with specific skills and knowledge across a spectrum of advanced computational/statistical techniques, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, radiomics, natural language processing, oncology informatics, GPU-computing, programming in Python, R or related platforms, database design and application programming interfaces.

UCSF is the premier medical center in California, currently ranked 5th nationally by US News and World Reports. UCSF is also #2 in NIH funding nationwide. The Department of Radiation Oncology at the UCSF is part of the Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center, and employs 18 radiation oncologists, 19 faculty and staff physicists, 9 dosimetrists, and approximately 35 radiation therapists. The Department provides in- and outpatient radiotherapy services across three facilities within the city of San Francisco, with facilities that include Varian TrueBeam and TrueBeam STx, Elekta Versa, Siemens Artiste and Oncor linear accelerators, a Tomotherapy unit, a Gamma Knife Perfexion ICON, a Cyberknife VSI, multiple 4D wide bore CT scanners, comprehensive Hyperthermia program, active programs in intra-operative radiotherapy (including two Mobetron and one Intrabeam), and HDR and LDR brachytherapy. In addition, the department offers proton irradiation of ocular melanoma using a cyclotron located at the UC Davis campus. Treatment planning capabilities include Pinnacle, Eclipse, iPlan, GammaPlan, Multiplan, Oncentra, Raystation, MIM and Velocity. We have active research programs in machine learning, proton therapy, robotic brachytherapy, cross-platform comparison, SRS and SBRT, deformable image registration, and hyperthermia and thermal therapy technology. The Physics Division hosts a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Residency program with four residents, and hosts a number of postdocs and graduate students. Our physics faculty members have strong affiliations with UCSF and UC Berkeley graduate programs.

We intend to recruit at the Clinical Instructor rank, however, those qualified for the Assistant rank will be considered as well. Interested candidates should apply online at: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/apply/JPF01847 and submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, statement of research, statement of teaching, and contact information for three references.
