Cardiovascular Research Institute at University of California, San Francisco has an opening for a Full Specialist. The specialist will explore mechanisms of pathologic mucus gel formation in the airways with an emphasis on mechanisms of mucin polymer cross-linking via redox pertubation. The Fahy lab aims to develop novel mucolytic treatments for mucus pathology based on deep understanding of the biologic mechanisms that drive mucus gel stiffness. Chief among these mechanisms are oxidative pathways that target thiol groups in cysteine domains in mucins. Key molecules of interest are peroxidases and their halide substrates that convert hydrogen peroxide to potent oxidative reactants with specificity for SH groups. The specialist will be responsible for building research systems that focus on better understanding of how these molecules operate in the context of airway inflammation to drive mucu pathology in airway diseases such as asthma, COPD, and CF. Key expertise areas include lung and airway biology, cell and molecular biology, and rheology. Key skills include ability to design assays that quantify the kinetics of chemical or biological reactions.
Bachelor level degree in biology, chemistry, or related field with at least 10 years of laboratory experience or a terminal degree and a track record of publishing manuscripts in health science topics is required. Independent specialized research is preferred.
Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training. Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/apply/JPF01780.
