Research Specialist (Roy Lab)

The Biodesign Laboratory at UCSF, led by Dr. Shuvo Roy, is seeking a highly-motivated specialist to work on the “The Kidney Project” ( We seek to hire a research specialist to work with current graduate students and postdocs in our multidisciplinary team of academic and industry researchers who are applying MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and tissue engineering strategies to medical device development. The specialist will contribute to developing an implantable device suitable for preclinical testing in collaboration with nephrologists, biomedical engineers, and transplant surgeons. More specifically, the individual will be working on medical device experiment plans and studies necessary to transition the device from preclinical to clinical trials.

Required qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in engineering or related discipline.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in engineering (or related field) or at least five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialist appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) in engineering (or related field) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Experience working in a bioengineering research laboratory is required.

Preferred qualification:

  • Experience working with cell cultures.

This is a full-time position, and would be ideal for a recent or upcoming graduate seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art technologies. It is our intention for the selected candidate to contribute meaningfully to projects and co-author peer-reviewed publications.
