UCSF, Mission Bay Campus

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF, Mission Bay Campus is seeking a Specialist for full-time work to perform and manage research activities in biochemistry and structural biology. The position is in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Southworth and will support research efforts using cryo-electron microscopy to determine 3D structures of important biological macromolecules associated with human neurodegenerative diseases. Highly motivated candidates capable of independent problem solving and teamwork are encouraged to apply. This position will be part of a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities in the Sandler Neurosciences Building on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. A successful candidate will be hired at the Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Duties Include:
• Perform molecular cloning, protein expression, cell culture and protein purification experiments.
• Participate in lab meetings and multidisciplinary collaborations.
• Maintain chemical inventory and ensure lab compliance with health and safety.
• Perform general lab maintenance including ordering supplies and making cell culture media.
• Receive training and perform advanced research techniques including cryo-electron microscopy, computational biology, and protein biochemistry.

Required Qualifications:
• Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences or related field.
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant or Associate rank must possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in biomedical sciences or related field.
• 1-2 years of biomedical research and/or lab management experience.
• Previous experience in biochemistry lab work .

Desired Qualifications:
• Experience in molecular biology including PCR, cloning, and work with recombinant DNA.
• Experience in biochemistry methods including protein expression and purification and work with baculovirus-insect cell expression systems.
• Experience in structural biology methods such as x-ray crystallography.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
