University of California, San Francisco

The Department of Psychiatry is now posting for a Junior Specialist. The successful candidate will assist graduate students and postdoctoral fellows managing the vole colony, performing behavioral experiments in voles, and molecular biology. Responsibilities may include harvesting of vole embryos formicroinjection; husbandry associated with setting up timed matings, performing stereotaxic surgeries to deliver viruses and drugs to specific anatomic sites in the vole brain; performing immunostaining of brain slices to characterize gene expression in the nervous system; running behavioral assays; genotyping and vole colony maintenance.

This would be an ideal position for a recent or upcoming graduate seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art techniques in neuroscience prior to applying to graduate school, and it is our intention for the selected candidates to contribute meaningfully to projects and co-author peer-reviewed publications.

Applicants must have received or must be expecting to receive an undergraduate degree in biology or a related discipline at the time of hire. Experience working in a research laboratory is a prerequisite. This is a full-time position, but there is start-date flexibility for the right candidate.
