Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program, UCSF
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is launching a search for the program director of UCSF’s Internal Medicine (IM) Residency.
UCSF’s IM residency has a long tradition of producing leaders in healthcare (including recent directors of the CDC, the FDA, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Gates Foundation, along with several chairs of medicine). Both Doximity and US News & World Report recently ranked the program as among the best in the country (#3 and #1, respectively). The residency program consists of a categorical track (approximately 40 residents/year) and two primary care tracks (one based at UCSF/Mt. Zion Hospital [10 residents/year] and the other based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General [8 residents/year]). Within the programs, there are Pathways to Discovery/Areas of Distinction in molecular medicine, health and society, health equities, health professions education, global health, and clinical research.
The program director directly leads the categorical track, and has overall responsibility for managing the entire IM residency enterprise.
We are seeking a leader who can take the UCSF IM residency to even greater heights. The leader will build on the existing strengths, including superb and highly engaged residents and faculty and unmatched diversity of clinical experiences. (Inpatient and outpatient training are equally divided between a large academic health system [UCSF Health], a VA medical center [the San Francisco VA], and a safety net hospital [Zuckerberg San Francisco General].) In addition to teaching core competencies, the program aims to be at the forefront of education innovations in new and emerging areas, including population health, the integration of clinical informatics into training and patient care, simulation training, the promotion of quality, safety, and value, and new practice models in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We seek to build on our tradition of diversity (28% of this year’s internship class is from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine) and to focus on producing leaders in all aspects of medicine and its subspecialties.

The successful candidate will have:
- a career as an academic internist, generalist or subspecialist
- current faculty rank of associate or full professor
- current board certification in internal medicine and any relevant subspecialty
- a strong track record of leadership in medical education, ideally demonstrated by achievements as an program director, associate program director, or comparable leadership role in medical education
- a strong commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion
- superb communication and collaboration skills, with demonstrated flexibility and adaptability
- an understanding of the legal, regulatory, and accreditation issues that pertain to graduate medical education
- Expertise in curricular design, implementation, and evaluation

Job Description and Accountabilities
The Director of the UCSF Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Program will be responsible for overseeing the IM residency program within the UCSF Department of Medicine and directly leading the categorical internal medicine residency track. The Director will be responsible for establishing and nurturing a culture of continuous improvement and collegiality, for promoting scholarship and innovation, for responding to new demands and opportunities borne of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, and for representing and advocating for the UCSF residency in local, national, and internal arenas. The Director will lead the admission and accreditation processes, as well as all relevant residency director roles within the GME structure at UCSF.
The Director will be accountable for the following:
• Managing the selection process to ensure that UCSF recruits an outstanding and diverse intern class, with diversity defined broadly, including race, and ethnicity, but also specialty, research, and other academic interests
• Building superb educational programs, ensuring that residents have exceptional experiences in all rotations and that faculty are held accountable for creating such experiences
• Recruiting and leading the associate program directors and site directors, providing guidance and mentorship as well as ensuring accountability
• Recruiting and leading the selection process for chief residents and providing guidance and mentorship to them through their terms
• Leading the assessment process for residents, one that includes the use of competencies, is in compliance with ACGME policies, and ensures that residents receive useful feedback on such assessments
• Leading the mentoring and personal/career counseling program for residents, including effectively advocating for residents in applying for jobs and fellowships
• Creating a strategy for continuous improvement and evolution of the residency program in response to opportunities and challenges, including those in the healthcare delivery system and those created by our growing clinical and research knowledge base
• Representing the residency program in local, regional, national, and international fora
• Provide strong financial stewardship, including effectively managing the residency budget, responsibly advocating for resources, and fostering philanthropy
• Establishing a positive working relationship with residency and other relevant staff and, together, creating an organization known for its excellence in operations
• Establishing a culture of innovation and scholarship by promoting scholarship among residents and program leaders as well as through personal scholarship related to medical education and innovation
