Position: Research Biophysicist - Advanced Light Source in Berkeley California

SUMMARY: As a member of the National Center for X-ray Tomography (NCXT), provide technical and scientific support to collaborators and users of the NCXT beamline (http://ncxt.lbl.gov) located at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley California. The successful candidate will organize user and collaborator visits to the NCXT, and manage their access to instrumentation and image processing programs. Work with the NCXT Director and other NCXT scientists to develop methodology and instrumentation for collecting and analyzing data using synchrotron radiation. Engage in independent research projects involving the study of biological cells using various biophysical techinques, such as correlated fluorescence and soft x-ray tomography, and publish resulting data.

DUTIES: Essential - Provide support for users and collaborators regarding data collection, processing, archiving, and analysis. Be responsible for organizing user and collaborator visits to the NCXT and their usage of Center instrumentation and image processing software. Participate in engineering projects to advance the imaging capabilities. Participate in the development of instrumentation and methodology for cryo structured illumination microscopy and soft x-ray tomography. Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of collaborative experiments involving biological x-ray microscopy. Collaborate with colleagues both internal and external to the Berkeley Lab and assist with data analysis. Prepare documentation for staff and users. Prepare scientific data for publication in refereed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences. Required to occasionally work off-hours and weekends to support users. Marginal - Assist with developing research proposals that lead to continued funding in the area of biological x-ray imaging for the NCXT.

QUALIFICATIONS: Essential - Substantial experience working in the area of synchrotron science using complex instrumentation and computer controls. Experience with the collection of experimental data for biological fluorescence and x-ray imaging. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and organize results for publication and presentation documented by publication record in either: physics, biology, bioengineering, biophysics, biochemistry or instrumentation fields. Excellent written communication skills along with strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Experience in the use of computer programs required for fluorescence and x-ray tomography. Ability to work in a team environment and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues. Ph.D. in physics, biology, bioengineering, biophysics, or related field. We prefer candidates who have some postdoc experience.
