Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases
We are searching for a neuroscientist to join our team as an in-vivo Drug Discovery research specialist, to start in Summer 2017. This position is available to study optimal ways of delivering candidate drugs to the nervous system of animal models for neurodegenerative diseases. The person in this position will work closely with our chemist, pharmacologists, neuroscientist, and veterinary and husbandry team members in an effort to optimize methods to deliver candidate drugs to animals safely and reliably. This position will be part of a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities in the new Sandler Neurosciences Building on the UCSF Mission Bay campus, but the position will be based at Hunters Point Animal Facility.
This specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all drug discovery studies at the animal facility are being conducted following proper protocol. In addition, the specialist will be responsible for developing alternate drug delivery methods including but not limited to more optimal surgical procedures and better food delivery mechanisms. In addition, this specialist will make sure that all animals are provided with the right formulation of medicated diet and that these activities are properly recorded in an electronically and/or in hard copy.
This person will be responsible for identifying potential problems with drug discovery studies, forming a draft plan for addressing these and promptly communicating these to her/his supervisor. Additionally, this person will be expected to draft and/or optimize Standard Operating Procedures for all assigned duties.
The person in this position will be responsible for successfully performing the following techniques in rodents: Injections via IP,SQ,IV; Dosing animals via oral gavage, IV, IP, SQ; Rodent Surgery; Performing blood collection via the saphenous vein, jugular, and lingual vein; Collecting sample including tissues, bodily secretions and feces.
• Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).
• Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
• At least 1-2 years of experience on administering compounds to rodents.
• Proven proficiency in performing rodent neurosurgery.
• One-year time commitment, with possibility of extension.
• Proficiency in using basic applied analytical chemistry (i.e. moles, Molarity, osmolality, etc.) and in preparing correct test-diet formulations based on study needs.
• Experience with tissue collection, preservation, and storage.
• Experience in aseptic technique, anesthesia, and post-operative care.
• Demonstrated ability to work safely and efficiently in ABSL1-3 conditions.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
