Position description

The Department of Cellular & Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) is seeking a basic science educator for a full time faculty position. The selected candidate will be appointed at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full in the Adjunct Professor series depending on qualifications and interests.

UCSF believes that the goal of health professions education is to alleviate the burden of suffering and illness in our patients and to improve the health of our communities. The School of Medicine basic science educators provide leadership in design, delivery, and assessment of the biomedical sciences foundational to the health professions student curricula. Success in this work requires translating the emerging discoveries in science and medicine into enduring core principles and applications of those principles.

The CMP basic science educator will help lead pharmacology education in the integrated SOM Bridges Curriculum and the curricula of the UCSF schools of pharmacy and dentistry. Pharmacology education includes (1) direct teaching in the form of lectures, on-line lessons, small and large group discussion
sessions, and review sessions; (2) design and grading of formative and summative assessments; (3) integrating and monitoring pharmacology as a topic thread in the longitudinal medical student curriculum ; (4) assisting struggling learners; (5) mentoring medical students assisting with pharmacology-focused education projects; and (6) coordinating the CMP faculty teaching assignments.

The CMP basic science educator will also serve as a member of the SOM foundational science career basic science educators by, over time and in a developmentally appropriate way, (1) teaching in skill-based, longitudinal curricula such as the Core Inquiry Curriculum and the Team Learning & Communication Skills series; (2) serving on curriculum committees; (3) directing a Bridges Curriculum Foundational Science block; (4) engaging in educational scholarly work and disseminating the results; (5) mentoring more junior educators. This position includes ample opportunity for professional development and growth in health sciences education and educational research. Appointees with titles in this series also engage in University and public service consistent with their assignments.

Requirements:
• PhD in pharmacology or a closely related biomedical field
• Experience in higher education with documented effectiveness as a teacher
• Outstanding oral and written communication; organization; and interpersonal skills
• A commitment to advancing the schools’ culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

• Experience in health professions education
• Ability to engage with students and faculty in continuous educational improvement
