Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 – 5:00 pm (with some flexibility) plus occasional evenings and weekends.

Job Description: A laboratory at the Parnassus campus of UCSF is looking to appoint a Junior Specialist to help with experiments or independently carry out experiments that address mechanisms of hematopoiesis, immunity, and development, using Drosophila melanogaster and other models.

We are most interested in talented, motivated, enthusiastic candidates who have strong communication (written and verbal) skills and want to ultimately perform independent research. Candidates should be detail-oriented and possess excellent organization and analytical skills. The successful applicant must be willing and eager to work closely with the PI and other faculty and their lab members. Candidates who are looking for additional experience in a biomedical research laboratory before pursuing graduate education or a career in biotechnology are particularly encouraged to apply. A minimum 12-month commitment is required.

Job Responsibilities:
Perform experiments and image/data analysis under the direction of PI and/or other lab members. Tasks will include qPCR, Drosophila husbandry, genetics and dissection, immune challenge assays (standard laboratory bacterial strains), immunohistochemistry, cell assays, molecular biology work, lab organization and ordering. The candidate will be expected to document analysis and research findings with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Additional duties may include participating in general laboratory set-up, organization and maintenance, assistance with ordering and unpacking supplies, and orienting new lab members.

Active participation in group meetings and monthly Drosophila meetings is expected.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology or similar. Current students (Bachelor’s degree or similar in progress) with extensive lab experience (4yrs or more) are also eligible.

Experience: Minimum one year of experience working in a biology or biomedical research lab; for candidates with a degree in progress other conditions apply (see above). Demonstrated experience with standard laboratory calculations (for example, mathematical calculations to determine cell numbers and dilutions of stock chemical solutions) and with routine statistical analyses (standard deviation, t-test etc.). Must be experienced with Drosophila husbandry and genetics, and have experience with bacterial cultures. Previous experience with RNA extraction and qPCR analysis is preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.

Physical Requirements: Normal physical requirements include good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination. The position requires excellent manual dexterity and familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation.
