Position description

University of California, San Francisco

Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division

The Fahy Lab is ideally recruiting for an Assistant Researcher, however, the selected candidate will be appointed at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointees should have significant record of academic accomplishment including published or in-press publication. Additionally, appointees will provide considerable independence in planning and execution of research.

The search is for a Professional Researcher who will contribute to investigations of the mechanisms of disease biology in airway diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and COPD with an emphasis on airway epithelial cell biology and pathologic mucus gel formation. We are examining the changes in epithelial cell function that contribute to mechanism of pathologic mucus gel formation and to other airway remodeling pathology such as subepithelial fibrosis. The work involves culturing epithelial cells at air liquid interface and manipulating gene and protein expression in these cells. It also involves interrogation of human airway biospecimens using gene- and protein-based quantification methods as a strategy for uncovering disease mechanisms for follow up studies in experimental model systems. It also involves study of the biophysical properties of airway mucus gels to better understand how these mucus gels stiffen in disease states and how rational strategies may be devised to normalize airway mucus movement and function. Experimental approaches include studies of gene and protein expression in airway epithelial cell culture at air liquid interface using qPCR, protein quantification, and imaging (confocal microscopy).

Required Qualifications:

• A PhD with research experience in cell and molecular biology.
• At least 3 postdoctoral years of research experience with airway epithelial cell biology.
• 5 years of laboratory experience (graduate and postdoctoral) with molecular techniques such as qPCR, immunoassays, and confocal microscopy.
• Record of past success in working with primary human airway epithelial cells grown at air liquid interface, including experience in manipulating gene expression in these primary cells.
• Evidence of a capability to plan, execute and interpret and report experiments.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to collaborate well with others in a diverse workplace

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working with human airway biospecimens.
• Experience with pulmonary biology

Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

UC San Francisco seeks candidates whose experience, teaching, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
