Medical Director of the Hematology Laboratory

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a clinical hematopathologist to serve as the Medical Director of the Hematology Laboratory at our Mission Bay Hospitals. This position is in the Health Sciences Clinical and/or Clinical X series, which emphasizes strong commitment to clinical service and teaching. Applicants must hold an MD degree (or equivalent degree) with eligibility for California medical licensure and board certification or eligibility in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Subspecialty board certification or eligibility in Hematopathology is also required with one to two years of clinical fellowship training.

The successful candidate will direct the Hematology Laboratory at the Mission Bay Hospitals. The laboratory will service the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital (183 beds, including a robust pediatric hematology/oncology service), the UCSF Women’s Specialty Hospital (36 beds), and the UCSF Cancer Hospital (70 beds), as well as numerous outpatient facilities on the Mission Bay campus. The Hematology Director will be a member of a team of clinical pathologists that are responsible for the daily operations of the Mission Bay Hospital Clinical Laboratories. In addition to the pediatric population at Mission Bay, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the adult Hematopathology service at our Parnassus campus. Combined, these services perform over 2,000 bone marrow biopsy interpretations annually, primarily for diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma. The candidate will also provide medical interpretation of blood smear and body fluid diagnosis and work with the Anatomic Pathology Department interpretation of lymph node biopsy specimens. Expertise in the use and interpretation of flow cytometry for the diagnosis of hematologic disorders, as well as interest and experience interpretation of cytology specimens is also preferred. Salary and title will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and training.
