Protein Biochemist - Lab Operations Manager Wanted

We seek a motivated protein biochemist and/or molecular biologist to contribute to projects in the Kortemme lab (kortemmelab.ucsf.edu) focused on protein design and synthetic and systems biology, and to manage our laboratory’s operations. The individual will work closely with graduate students and postdocs in the group on research projects using advanced molecular biology, protein biochemistry and functional assays (including construct and library generation, site-directed mutagenesis, protein expression and purification, biophysical techniques, and high-throughput functional characterization in bacteria, yeast, and mammalian model systems). Operations management duties will include lab safety, lab database maintenance, equipment maintenance, lab supply management and budgeting, and supervision and training of lab personnel. An ideal candidate would also be able to conduct a small to moderate amount of system administration for lab computers and servers, and to contribute to grant writing and reporting.

Qualified applicants should have at least a master’s degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related discipline, and sufficient knowledge in protein biochemistry and molecular biology. The ideal applicant will have at least 2 years experience in a high-paced research lab.

Required qualifications:
• Masters or PhD degree or >5 years experience in a research laboratory.
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art molecular biology or protein biochemistry techniques.
• Excellent organizational, technical and communications (both written and oral) skills.

Preferred qualifications:
• Knowledge of both state-of-the-art molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques.
• Specialized expertise in one or more of the following: protein engineering, directed evolution, functional screens and selections, enzymology, protein structure characterization, protein binding assays, CRISPR/Cas-based engineering, bacterial fitness assays, Western blotting, S. cerevisiae functional genomics, mammalian cell culture.
• Knowledge of system administration for lab computers and servers.
• Experience in a team-based research environment.
• Experience with writing grant proposals and grant progress reporting.
