Junior Specialist - TSI Lab in Division of Adult CT Surgery

Heart failure is the leading cause of deaths worldwide. The generation of cardiomyocytes derived from embryonic stem (ES) cells is a possible therapy for enhance the heart function after myocardial infarction. The TSI-Lab lab at the UCSF Surgery is looking for an Junior Specialist with stem cell and molecular biology experience (Stem Cell culture, transplant rejection pathways etc.), to assist with therapeutic and development efforts. This individual will work closely with the group working on generating stem cell derived cardiomyocytes, characterize the immune response in vitro and in vivo in different mouse strains and investigate transplant rejection pathways.

The TSI-Lab works in four key areas:

  1. Stem cell culture including the differentiation stem cells in cardiomyocytes
  2. Validating the possible transplant rejection of stem cells and differentiated cardiomyocytes
  3. Modulation of cell surface markers to reduce the potential of immune activation
  4. Testing of immune response in different animal models

The position requires a Master’s degree in Biology or related field and a demonstrated capacity to work accurately and learn quickly. It is an outstanding opportunity for new graduates. Excellent written and oral communication skills as well meticulous and well-organized lab bench skills are required. Knowledge of stem cell culture, flow cytometry, immunological assays (e.g. Elispot, Elisa) are necessary. Familiarity with administrative and lab organization is desirable.
